How many diapers is enough?

I did an inventory of our cloth diapers (and some accessories as well) recently and this is what we have to date:

Our pockets and just 1 our hybrids. Others in laundry or other organizer.

Some of the pockets I don't use because they don't fit RaeRae that well. I am looking to destash those so I can get some others. So this got me thinking, how many diapers is "enough?" If you're like me and collect cloth diapers because of colors and prints, you may feel like you never have enough. I call this the "fluffy itch." Others call it "fluffy addiction."

When people ask me "how many diapers do you need," I generally tell them "enough for 3 days of diapers." If you think about it, a newborn baby will be changed on average 10-12 times a day. Times that by 3 equals about 30 diapers. RaeRae, at 7 months, is changed about 6-8 times a day because she goes longer at nighttime now. For that reason, we use 100 percent cotton prefolds with a hemp insert under a PUL cover and that gives us no leaks! It will go up to 12 hours for us. During the day, we use pocket diapers and on occasion, fitteds for naptime.

Since I now have a front-loader, I tend to my diaper laundry every other day or every two days because I find my diapers get cleaner with smaller loads. I try to keep my diapers in rotation so I'm only really washing a particular diaper one or two times a week instead of three or five times a week. This keeps the diapers in better shape and lasting longer.

I do think we have enough diapers, but do I "want" more? Sure! On occasion, the "fluffy itch" comes again and I "window-shop" online.

I currently got my eye on the new bumGenius prints. We will be stocking those in December/January and I'm sooo excited!

So how many diapers do you think is enough for full-time cloth diapering? Do share--how many diapers do you have in your stash and what kind? Feel free to share a picture on the facebook page.

  1. Based on memory, and not actually counting since I'm at work and not at home, I have close to 60 diapers.

When I started, I had 26 ... 13 Flip and 13 Econobum. It cost me $150. I was proud that I could cloth diaper for so little and would've been content with that ...... until we found out we were expecting #2 and I became a consultant. Now I just want them all.

At any rate ... yeah. We have a lot of diapers.

    14 Flip + 5 covers
    9 Econobum + 4 covers (I gave away 4 of my diapers)
    5 Fuzzibunz OS
2 Happy Heinies OS with snaps
    1 BG 3.0 with aplix
    4 FB size Large
    4 Kawaii OS
    7 Kawaii OS covers
2 Dream-Eze AIO, one Large one Med
    2 GroVia AI2
    1 BG Elemental
    1 bamboo contour
several homemade fitteds - I think 10 total, medium to large
3 HH pocket trainers without snaps
    5 Imse Vimse trainers

We have enough diapers that I could go an entire week without doing laundry. The only reason I wash when I do is so that my Flips are clean for daycare and because my diaper pail gets full. But my diapers don't typically get folded right away when they're washed, because I don't need them right away. I grab my Flips for the diaper bag and leave the rest until I have time. Usually the next laundry day I fold them all together.

  2. 25 pockets and 2 AIOs is perfect for us with a 7 month old and doing laundry every other evening. We started with 24 pockets and that was plenty but now we just have a few for cushion.
