Bye bye service, hello to independence!

Hubby and I discussed over the weekend about our cloth diapering routines and what is working or not working for us. I asked him how he felt about discontinuing our diaper service and going full-time washing them ourselves. He said, "that's fine."  It makes sense to stop the service since we are already washing our pocket diapers every 2-3 days anyways. I calculated it would be half the price to wash themselves versus having our cloth diaper service.

A bit more background information:

When I was pregnant, we decided we would have a local diaper service to bring us prefolds on a weekly basis instead of washing themselves because we lived in an apartment complex with coin laundry. Two weeks before my due date, we got set up with the "Pre-birth" package of eighty 100 percent cotton prefolds and bought a bunch of covers ourselves. After she was born, we waited until she was 10 days old to start using them because I was too nervous about the umbilical cord stump being irritated, and being overwhelmed as a new mama as well! But since she was 10 days old, she has been in cloth diapers!

The prefolds and covers worked well for us! At first I thought they were a bit bulky because they obviously were thicker than the disposables. But over time, we got used to them. Rarely we had to use a disposable diaper because we ran out of prefolds for that week or were out and about. During those times, I always felt she was soooo much lighter and like she had no diaper on. I didn't like that feeling and felt awful for putting a disposable on because I loved the fluff on her and knew it was much healthier for her skin.

The diaper service continued to pick up our dirty prefolds and bring us new ones each week. We adjusted our numbers when RaeRae was a bit older and sleeping through the night (equaling less diapers).

Now that she's almost four months old and we are using pocket diapers more often, I feel ready to let go of the service! We found a system that works for us with the coin laundry. Instead of paying 80 dollars a month for 70-80 prefolds a week, we will pay between 20-30 dollars a month for coin laundry at the complex with our pockets that we can use again and again, and for our next baby too!

We are still planning to move into a place with our own washer and dryer soon. That will make washing the diapers a bit more easier. For now, it doesn't bother me too much as long as I get to have some cute fluffy diapers!

Cloth-diapering Journey: why we cloth-diaper

One of my passions is cloth-diapering. Yep. Some people may find that crazy while others may totally relate to the "fluffy addiction." I just love it!

For privacy reasons, my daughter will be referred to as RaeRae on my blog and fan pages.

Three main reasons why we cloth-diaper:

1. Good for her bum! (No chemicals like disposable diapers have). Less rashes, if any, and oh so soft!

2. Good for environment! (No stinky disposable diapers in landfills). It takes YEARS to break down those sposies (nickname for disposables). Cloth is reusable and all the cloth diapers we have can be used for our next baby. Then when we're all done, we can sell them to other mamas!

3. Good for our wallet! Think hundreds of dollars. Disposables average about $2,000 per baby from birth to potty-training. A good set of cloth diapers can cost as low about $300 to last for the entire time from birth to potty training! Some people may think that's a lot of money to pay up front, but you can certainly buy one diaper at a time and during pregnancy too! There are options...many options!

Okay, there are FOUR reasons why we cloth-diaper (and this last reason is pretty much for me, hehe):

4. They are soooo CUTE!! Seriously, there are so many cute prints out there! I love picking out different colors and designs for her to wear. Sometimes I like to pick out diapers that match her outfits. When she's a bit older and when it's warmer, she can just wear the diaper alone for cute photo shoots or crawling around.

It's a start

This is my first blog post. Whoo! I'm still learning all the features of Blogger so bear with me as I begin this journey. It's a bit overwhelming when you're not fully familiar with HTML codes and such. I like how Blogger gives you templates to choose from, but it's not easy to decide on ONE template.

It's a start. It's not perfect but like everything else in life, the first step needs to taken to move on to other things and to learn.

I am looking forward to many more posts, sharing my journey as a new Cloth Diaper consultant for Diaper Parties by Everything Birth.

So yes...this blog post? It's a start.
